Hydrant Flushing - Week of September 28, 2026
The Village of Lakewood Department of Public Works will be flushing fire hydrants starting the week of Monday, September 28 thru Friday October 2nd 2026, in the event of inclement weather Flushing will continue the week of Oct 5th.
Flushing will be scheduled during the daytime hours; starting at 8:00 am finishing around 3:00 pm each day.
Fire hydrant flushing is a routine maintenance program where water utilities open hydrants one by one to systematically clear mineral and sediment buildup from water mains and test flows for emergency readiness.
What to Expect
- Discolored Water: Water may look rusty, tea-colored, or cloudy due to stirred-up sediment
- Low Pressure: You might notice a temporary drop in water pressure while nearby hydrants are open.
- Service Continuity: Water service usually remains active without interruption during standard operations.
Recommended Steps
- Before Flushing: Store a pitcher of drinking water in the refrigerator.
- During Flushing: Avoid using washing machines and dishwashers to prevent stained laundry or clogged filters.
- After Flushing: Run your cold water tap (preferably a bathtub or utility sink) for a few minutes until the water flows clear. If laundry becomes discolored, do not dry the clothes and rewash them immediately using a rust remover or detergent
- Discolored Water: If the water does not clear up within a few hours please contact the Village Hall at 815-549-3025 and someone will follow-up with you ASAP.
The Village of Lakewood Water meets all safe drinking water standards and is tested regularly, but we do not advise any one to consume water not clear in appearance.
Look for flushing signs posted in your area and keep in mind: On windy days a great deal of drift will occur, all windows in both vehicles and homes should be kept closed during flushing hours
